Entertain Your Dog the Healthy Way

Keeping an energetic dog entertained while on the road can be a challenge. Try out some of these ideas and you’ll have a peaceful pup!

Create an Outdoor Space:

I’ve seen many dogs contained outside of their RV by a portable fence. This is a safe way to allow your dog to be off-leash. Your dog can simply keep her brain active by watching all that’s going on around the campsite. Just be aware that if you’re dog barks a lot, this may not be a good option in an RV park or campground.

Hiking:

Taking your dog on a hike can be a great way to release the energy. A great resource for finding dog-friendly hikes in the USA and Canada is hikewithyourdog.com. They give a state-by-state and province-by-province list of hikes you and your pooch can enjoy. And, if you need hiking gear for your pooch, https://yourdogadvisor.com/dog-hiking-gear/ gives you some great ideas.

Playing Fetch:

If your dog can be trusted off-leash, you can find a field to play fetch with your dog. This exercise is good, especially after long travel days. Just remember to look for no dogs allowed signs. Also, clean up after your dog, especially if you’ve chosen a playing field (soccer, football, baseball, school playground). No one likes to step in doggie doo.

Stuffed Chew Toys:

Dogs love it when you put tasty treats into their chew toys like a KONG or Sumo. You can leave the treats as they are or combine them with other ingredients and freeze them so they’ll last longer. Teach Some Tricks:

When dogs use their brain, they get tired. If you don’t know any tricks to teach, then you can reach out to a dog trainer or go to the public library for books on trick training. I’ve included a video with some ideas below.  Teaching your dog some new tricks will not only be fun but will strengthen the bond you have with your dog even more.

A dog who is entertained by getting lots of exercise and brain stimulation is a happy dog. And we all know that happy dogs = happy people!
